Not long ago we headed to Huntington to shoot an episode of Restaurant Hunter on FiOS1 Long Island. One of the great restaurants that we were featuring that day was Ariana Restaurant, an Afghani / Mediterranean spot on Main Street that is known as being one of the best Afghani restaurants on the island.
We’re huge fans of Mediterranean cuisine and we’re also big on the concept of fast-casual, a genre that favorites such as Chiptole excel at all over the island. For years we have passed by Wild Fig on Northern Boulevard without going inside. If we had known that this location was a mash-up of all of those things that we love, we would have visited years sooner.
Pete’s Pitaria is one of those restaurants that has been around on Long Island forever. As the name would suggest, they have loads of pita breads that are served daily and with that, healthy skewered combinations with hummus and Greek salads are coming off the line daily.
MP Taverna in Roslyn is a rarity on Long Island. It’s helmed by owner/chef Michael Psilakis, a heavyweight in the international scene. He’s amassed a Michelin star, a James Beard Award nomination and he can be seen on various television series regularly airing (including Iron Chef). It’s a wonderful thing that he has planted MP Taverna, his take on a modern Greek bistro, right here in our own backyard.
Long Island cuisine is as good as it has ever been right at this moment and it’s made up of unique restaurants, interesting people and great dishes. All three have come together in this Massapequa wine and small plates haven; Salumi.
Update: This location is closed
When we announced the opening of Restaurant Anise a few weeks back, we knew that we hit on something within a few hours. Our twitter feed, hitting the timelines of many users, took to our announcement and at least one follower moved on in for their lunchtime serving on the same day. Needless to say, they were impressed.
Update: This location is now closed. Easy come, easy go.
Chef Michael Ginor, a superstar in both Great Neck (TLV and LOLA among his most recent projects) and points further out is expanding his culinary reach on the North Shore with the opening of Restaurant Anise, a pan-Mediterranean establishment. Two weeks into their new life, Anise is picking up buzz and customers with its Hoomoos, kabobs, fresh seafood and falafels.
