Tiger Lily in Port Jefferson
If you haven’t heard of Tiger Lily Café in Port Jefferson it’s about time you do. Tiger Lily is one of the best vegetarian friendly establishments you can find on Long Island.
The Café describes itself as an alternative eatery and I have to agree. It has very relaxed environment, as if you are coming to someone’s kitchen and then eating in their living room. The décor is very unique. None of the furniture matches however it all coalesces nicely like something you may spot in a Harry Potter film. There is seating in the front of the café on the curb, inside of course and on an outside balcony in the back, dubbed Medusa’s Lounge. The furniture is a mix of chairs, small tables, love seats and coffee tables. Work from young local artists fills the walls and every week Tiger Lily hosts Acoustic Sundays Sessions featuring up and coming musicians from the area.
The food is great at Tiger Lily, offering both vegetarian cuisine and non-vegetarian options satisfying all populations including failed vegetarians such as myself. I ordered the Newport Blues Wrap with chicken on a whole wheat wrap. It’s made with mesclun greens,Bartlettpears, spicy brown sugar roasted pecans, bleu cheese and Joanna’s spicy sweet cranberry vinaigrette with chicken. The Newport Blues Wrap was sweet and probably one of the best dishes I have ever had there. The pears really were very fresh and made the sandwich quite distinctive. My friend ordered the Bella Bella Sandwich on a spinach wrap. This Bella Bella sandwich contains grilled marinated portabello mushrooms, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella, salt and pepper, and balsamic and pesto sauce. The sandwich was very good but is a staple at many vegetarian eateries. If you go to Tiger Lily I suggest taking a risk and ordering a more unique menu choice; you’ll be rewarded for it. The sandwiches range in price from $7.50 – $8.50 and there are six choices of wraps, plain, whole wheat, spinach & herb, sun-dried tomato, pesto-garlic and southwest. The service was very fast and my order was up before I could choose a place to sit. Tiger Lily also offers a variety of chicken and tofu salads, falafels, stuffed mushrooms, tofu cutlets, tempeh and seasonal soups. The last time I visited I enjoyed the best carrot-ginger soup I have tasted.
Tiger Lily also opens its doors to host private parties of 20-35 guests. Parties are planned and menus priced on an individual basis. Tiger Lily does not have a liquor license but encourages guests to bring their own champagne, wine or beer to private parties.
I highly recommend Tiger Lily. The venue is unique and fun, the food tastes great, and there are so many healthy options to choose from. My only precaution is to keep an eye on your children… the consequences can be quite severe.
