Before they opened up shop on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, San Marzano came to Merrick with their quick-fired brick oven pizza creations. Located in a small spot on a corner of Merrick Avenue, just north of the train station, the nights are hopping at this italian favorite.

Named after the San Marzano tomato (one of the more flavorful tomatoes), the pizzas are made to order. Two minutes in the high-temperature pizza oven create a crispy crust with stringy homemade mozzarella cheese. We’ve been checking San Marzano out now for the better part of the last two years. On occasion we’ll stay in for the table service, but more often than not we’re taking it to go. We call it in and five minutes later our pizza is ready. High speed efficiency and a tasty product is all we need to keep ourselves happy.

The dining area of the restaurant is pretty small. Don’t let this deter you, though, because even with larger parties, the pizzas come out of the oven so quickly that the turnover rate is pretty high. Space may only be an issue on weekend nights, however, as most of the visits during the week that we have encountered are met with open tables.
