Mara’s Homemade in Syosset

Mara’s Homemade in Syosset

If one of the more unique restaurants on Long Island is hidden behind an ordinary strip center facade, we wonder how many people actually do know about it. We hadn’t heard much about it until we visited, but now that we’re aware of it, Mara’s Homemade is going to be a part of our never-ending rotation of great restaurants on the island.

Recently moving from their city location to this spot on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset, Mara’s is one of the most unique restaurants that is serving up fresh cajun and creole flown in in from Louisiana (on an almost daily schedule). The interior is painted in hues of purple and yellow and reminiscent of a New Orleans area restaurant, with a cuisine to match.

Our visit consisted of trying a variety of foods that we had not yet experienced. We sampled the alligator bites (from the kids menu – pictured above), the crawfish boil – hot and spicy, crawfish stuffed bread and their specialty, bbq grilled oysters.

The restaurant is a family affair. Mara Levy, namesake of the restaurant, runs the restaurant along with her husband. Her son Joshua runs the kitchen and daughter Chana manages the front-end of the restaurant. Since it’s family run, there’s special attention to detail and a willingness to serve the customers to ensure a great meal in every aspect. On any given night you can find most, if not all of them, in the restaurant helping out. Mara sat with us and explained the proper way to eat the crawfish in the boil to make sure that we got the most meat out of the shell.

If hot and spicy is your game, this is the place for you. The southern spices and heat, New Orleans atmosphere and the Levi family warmness will keep you coming back for more. Just make sure to have that drink handy for when you can’t take the heat any longer.
