Los Compadres in Huntington Station

Los Compadres in Huntington Station

Authentic Mexican cuisine doesn’t have to come from a fancy restaurant that is booked on a Saturday night. Sometimes it’s served best in the form of an off-the-beaten-path shack that does nothing more than pump out homestyle Mexican cuisine. This is what we consider Los Compadres in Huntington Station.

Since around 1990, Los Compadres has been around and serving hungry locals. Connie Maria Rivera, the proprietor, has come directly from Chihuahua, Mexico to bring some of her hometown favorites to the US. Located directly across the street from Walt Whitman’s birthplace, the restaurant is perfectly situated on Old Walt Whitman Road, which forks off from Route 110, to stop in and take out.

You won’t find that much room to sit down and eat in. The restaurant has about 4-5 tables, which can get pretty crowded around lunchtime. If you come off-hours, this isn’t a problem, but taking out and bringing the authentic Mexican cuisine isn’t such a bad thing. Either way, if you eat in or take out, you’ll be treated to some of the tastiest cuisine as well as some of the most affordable prices. The Cuarto De Pollo (quarter chicken), served with rice, beans and tortilla will set you back $6.99 while the Carne Asada (grilled shell steak) will hit among the top of the range at $11.89.

When searching the internet prior to our visit, we were not able to find suitable pictures of the food to do Los Compadres justice. We were happy to bring our camera to show some of the wonderful food selections that they have to offer. Among our choices for the day were Beef Tongue Tacos (we’d never had tongue before, so this was a first). Once you are able to get past the “tongue” aspect of it (maybe more of a psychological block, than anything else), the taco, filled with fresh cilantro, tomato and onion pops with flavor and is tender as can be. Place some salsa in there, which comes on the side and it’s a perfect meal.

We’re in the Huntington Station area quite a bit and we’ll look forward to visiting again with a few more friends in tow. It’s not often that a restaurant surprises us out of left field to offer more than it might appear from the outside. According to the saying, you can’t judge a book by its cover, and this certainly holds true for Los Compadres.
