Kitchen A Trattoria in St. James

Chef Eric Lomando is one of the reasons that St. James is known as having some of the best restaurants on Long Island. His dedication to technique, ingredients and service is well documented. With two restaurants located in the small town (Kitchen A Bistro is the other), he’s upped the ante for any restaurateurs looking to get into the game and has created a reason for many residents to drive far distances for some of his fresh cuisine. With Kitchen A Trattoria, Chef Lomando is crafting seasonal italian dishes for all to enjoy.

What Kitchen A Bistro is doing for the French-Mediterranean fare that it offers, Kitchen A Trattoria is doing for italian. A hallmark of the menu is seasonal cuisine; they’re basing their ever-changing menu based on what’s seasonally (and sometimes locally) available. There’s a garden in the back of Kitchen A Bistro, and due to its close proximity, some of your ingredients may have their origin only a few minutes away. This menu is heavily seafood based (note our Ocean Trout on top of lentils below).

If you would like to have a more interesting meal, you can forgo the regular menu and opt-in to the $50 Five Course Chef’s Tasting Menu. A lot of the ingredients in the dishes are slightly more edgy than you’ll find somewhere else (sometimes the descriptions on the menu are vague, for a reason), so if you’re a bit daring and intrigued by the idea of dining at the whim of the chefs, this option is for you.

The restaurant is tiny. A few tables, seating no more than 16 or so guests at any time, are spread throughout the small space. Chef Lomando, with the sparse space, makes the feature the food, not the decor. The quality of the food coming out of the kitchen rivals the best anywhere. The restaurant requires reservations on the weekends only and leaves the regular week to a first-come, first-serve policy. They’re closed on Sunday and Monday. In addition, credit cards are not accepted, as it is cash only.

A great attribute of Kitchen A Trattoria is that it is BYOB, without a corkage fee. This means that you can bring as much wine as you like and you won’t be charged by the restaurant for it. It’s a great win-win for the diners.

There’s a reason that Kitchen A Trattoria is consistently on the top 5-lists of major publications throughout the area. The attention to the things that matter (read: food) and the higher level of placing ingredients together will keep this restaurant on top. Now it’s up to you to head on out to the north shore of Suffolk County to sample it for yourself.
