Apple Picking at Lewin Farm in Wading River

Apple Picking at Lewin Farm in Wading River

We’re all about the family friendly activities on Long Island and in this time of year, we can’t think of anything better than apple picking on any of Long Island’s local farms. We took a trip to Lewin Farm in Wading River this past weekend to wander the fields collecting our bounties from the rows and rows of apple trees lining the farm.

Lewin Farm is a collection of a few locations under the same family operation. The first stop we made was to their farm stand / pumpkin patch / corn maze to buy some fresh corn, hot off the grill (they have a variety of fresh food options as well, including an awesome baked potato). It was there that we learned the apple orchard was a short 3-minute drive away at a separate location. So we hit the road again in search of those red and green beauties.

If you’re thinking of going apple picking (or picking any seasonal fruit or vegetable) at a popular location, it’s always best to get there early. We found the road surrounding the apple orchard packed with cars and where we parked was a healthy walk away. This isn’t a big issue when you arrive, but if you have 50-lbs. of apples weighing you down upon your exit, it could be a problem.

The kids that we were with loved the apple orchard. There was room to run around and hunt for those elusive hanging fruit. Since there were so many people coming and going, the best available options were in the back of the farm and away form the main aisles.

When you arrive, you can either bring a bag with you or you can purchase a plastic bag on site, for 5-cents each. If you’d like to purchase a handmade basket for use (you can keep it as well), that will run $4. You walk around, pick your apples, head to the line and pay by the pound. It’s pretty simple. The line to pay can grown to a few hundred feet, but rest assured that it moves exceptionally fast once you are on it.

Lewin Farm, besides apples at this time of year also offers pick your own strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, apples, pumpkins and cut your own Christmas trees during that time of year.

This was a perfect kid-friendly (and adult happy) activity that went easy on the wallet but also allowed us to spend the day in the sun enjoying an activity together. That in itself is priceless. Plus, making fresh apple pie at home the day after doesn’t hurt, either.
