388 New American Cuisine in Roslyn Heights

Inventive New American Cuisine is not something that we’re seeing a lot of these days on Long Island. To sit down to a meal and be so content by what you’ve just eaten is almost falling off the map. That’s why when we were done with our meal at 388 New American Cuisine for a recent television shoot we were not only stuffed, but entranced by this new spot’s take on classic dishes.

For starters, the space that 388 is housed in is great. A large space that is divided between the bar area with a great fireplace, dining area (also a fireplace!), and a back dining area that is ideal for large parties or intimate dinners, 388 has what it takes for you to stay before and after dinner. We tried the dumplings for an appetizer and the Lobster Pot Pie for an entree. Here’s the rundown on both:

The chicken ginger dumplings are filled with chopped chicken infused with ginger, rolled and then boiled to cook. After they’re boiled (they could be served this way upon request for a healthier option) they’re quickly seared in a pan with oil for a crunchy exterior. A nice little asian flair, this appetizer has all the classic components. A little saltiness with the dipping sauce, some scallions on top and vegetables on the side, this was a perfect starter.

The comfort in the food is perfect, especially now that we’re heading into the colder winter months. Among their most popular dishes this season is their Lobster Pot Pie. A funky take on your classic Chicken Pot Pie, this rich dish will settle in your stomach and create that warm feeling that a fall / winter dish should create. Large amounts of tender lobster settled in with carrots, onions and other veggies under a nicely baked crust is the perfect meal. If I have had a favorite dish this year, this could possibly be it.

388 is something great. This particular spot on Willis Avenue in Roslyn Heights has seen its fair share of restaurants come and go, but everyone who we have spoken to who has eaten there in the past few months all seem to agree on one point; 388 is here to stay.
