Inside and Out: Carlo’s Bakery Westbury

Master Baker Buddy Valastro has spent the past few years across from us, two rivers away in Hoboken, NJ, but now he’s taking advantage of both his hugely successful tv presence (Cake Boss, of course) and the insatiable need for all things baked to bring Carlo’s Bakery to the Gallery at Westbury Plaza in Garden City; his first Long Island location.

Although Buddy is the front-facing representative of the family business, the lineage of the bakery goes way back; all the way to 1910. Carlo’s, originally opened by Carlo Guastaffero, was acquired by Bartolo Valastro Sr. in 1964. When Bartolo Sr. passed away in 1994, matriarch Mary Valastro and her children Grace, Maddalena, Mary, Lisa and master baker “Buddy” have expanded the family business into what we see today. With multiple locations in NJ, NYC and others opening in the near future, their empire is growing here on the east coast.

Open from 7am each and every morning, the early-bird will certainly reap the rewards of a morning visit. The lines, which can stretch out the door in the later part of the day, are virtually non-existent if you head there at opening. Come in that early and you can breeze in and out in a matter of minutes. Our visit was before 8am on a Wednesday and during our brief stay, we encountered a handful of visitors that all walked out with freshly-baked goods (and smiles).

Cakes, cupcakes, biscotti, lobster tails (there’s no seafood to be found in this variety), cookies, coffee and more can be found in any of the displays lining the bakery. There are also a few tables and chairs set up at the entrance so that those who stop in can stay a while and enjoy. It wouldn’t be a “Cake Boss” location without merchandise to buy, either. There are a variety of Cake Boss items to be found, that all relate to the brand. DVD’s, shirts, books, cups and more are all available for purchase, should you wish to bring a bit of the Boss home with you.

A high-end shopping center such as the Gallery at Westbury Plaza is sure to be an expensive retail space. A run-of-the-mill bakery would never be able to keep their doors open with the higher than normal operating costs. Based on the name recognition and quality products, we don’t foresee that being a problem for Carlo’s now, or in the future.
