When we first met Chef Noah Schwartz he was at the helm of Seafood Barge in Southold way back in 2007(ish). Not too long after our first meeting at that location, they closed up shop and Noah decided to head out on his own. A few miles away in Greenport, the old Frisky Oyster bar location was opening up, so due to the collision of events, Noah decided to open up Noah’s in the heart of Greenport, on Front Street.
Stopping by on a whim, in the dead of winter, to The Frisky Oyster in Greenport was as unexpected for us as it was for them. The beloved Greenport restaurant is a mainstay in the sleepy North Fork village and Owner / Chef Robby Beaver, at the helm since 2010, has been the most recent curator of this wonderful location.
Not long ago we headed to Huntington to shoot an episode of Restaurant Hunter on FiOS1 Long Island. One of the great restaurants that we were featuring that day was Ariana Restaurant, an Afghani / Mediterranean spot on Main Street that is known as being one of the best Afghani restaurants on the island.
The Oar Seafood Grille has been a Patchogue favorite for (almost) the last 30 years. Waterfront on the Patchogue River and with outdoor dining, all one has to do is enter the restaurant and look up at the ceiling to know that they are about to encounter some wonderful seafood. Oars and paddles line the restaurant and make you just want to jump into a boat and start paddling.
The Riverhead Project in Riverhead is unique for the area. At the entry point to the north fork, it’s proving to be not only one of the most popular spots, but it is also one of the most revered for its unique space, excellent cuisine and busy lounge area.
When one gets invited to North Fork Table and Inn in Southold, on Long Island’s North Fork, one drops everything and makes a beeline for the restaurant (and brings a camera with them to catalogue the trip). Such was the case on a recent chilly Sunday afternoon. True to fashion, North Fork Table and Inn lived up to the hype and showed us why they have been one of the top restaurants on Long Island (28 out of 30 for food in ZAGAT) on a consistent basis.
Kontokosta Winery, a new addition to the North Fork’s great wineries, is a wonderful winery in a magnificent building. It’s steps away from the Sound and when you’ve ordered a glass or a bottle after your tasting, you can make your way to the picnic benches and Adirondack chairs that sit overlooking the Sound and take in the view.
Off-season it may be tough to find a great drink spot that also serves up great food as well as a great atmosphere. In Greenport, near the end of the North Fork, it can get a bit quiet off-season, but that’s ok. When quiet isn’t what you’re looking for, Lucharitos will (usually) fulfill your need.
When Relish opened roughly two years ago in Kings Park, on Suffolk County’s north shore, owner / chef Stephen Cardello (formerly the chef at Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport) probably couldn’t have imagined its success and popularity with local foodies. Their weekend breakfast has been creating plenty of buzz in local circles and helping their cause is their location; on the corner of Main Street and also close to many of their suppliers. This has led to creative, fresh and seasonal fare.
With three locations across this island, Mi Tierrita in Brentwood envokes a Columbian feast. The rotisserie and grill at the front of the restaurant are pumping out chicken, steak and fish dishes galore; most served over heaping mounds of rice with sides such as plantains, avocado, egg and more. The mood is festive (there’s a full bar with frozen drinks and South American favorites) and the mostly spanish speaking staff and clientele are certainly appreciative of this taste of home. If heaping mounds of piping hot foods with excellent sides is your thing, then this is your new spot.
