When we last visited Vespa Cibobuono in Great Neck, owner Marco Mollo had recently purchased the restaurant from its previous owner. Fast forward almost a year and Marco has taken the restaurant, a Northern Italian masterpiece and transformed it into his own; Ponte Mollo. Placing his own stamp on the space, formerly known to those driving on Northern Boulevard for its Vespa continuously parked on the sidewalk, Marco can now continue to grow his expanding fan base of local diners and those looking for a wonderful italian night out.
When one gets invited to North Fork Table and Inn in Southold, on Long Island’s North Fork, one drops everything and makes a beeline for the restaurant (and brings a camera with them to catalogue the trip). Such was the case on a recent chilly Sunday afternoon. True to fashion, North Fork Table and Inn lived up to the hype and showed us why they have been one of the top restaurants on Long Island (28 out of 30 for food in ZAGAT) on a consistent basis.
Great Neck’s new Bareburger is the first (but not the last) Long Island location of the popular restaurant that can be found throughout the NYC Metro area. Focusing on organic and quality ingredients, this new restaurant, located in an old retail store, is expanding the options on Middle Neck Road.
Kontokosta Winery, a new addition to the North Fork’s great wineries, is a wonderful winery in a magnificent building. It’s steps away from the Sound and when you’ve ordered a glass or a bottle after your tasting, you can make your way to the picnic benches and Adirondack chairs that sit overlooking the Sound and take in the view.
Off-season it may be tough to find a great drink spot that also serves up great food as well as a great atmosphere. In Greenport, near the end of the North Fork, it can get a bit quiet off-season, but that’s ok. When quiet isn’t what you’re looking for, Lucharitos will (usually) fulfill your need.
When Relish opened roughly two years ago in Kings Park, on Suffolk County’s north shore, owner / chef Stephen Cardello (formerly the chef at Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport) probably couldn’t have imagined its success and popularity with local foodies. Their weekend breakfast has been creating plenty of buzz in local circles and helping their cause is their location; on the corner of Main Street and also close to many of their suppliers. This has led to creative, fresh and seasonal fare.
When we saw that PLANCHA, a new Tapas and Wine Bar was opening up in Garden City, our intuition told us that Josh, Jonathan and Lily, the trio behind one of our favorite spots on the South Shore, Salumi, in Massapequa, were behind this new spot. Our suspicions were confirmed and with that knowledge in our hands, we knew that diners were in for something special on the North Shore.
Back in the day (mid-90′s) Caruso’s Pizza was the place to go for those kids growing up in the Plainview area. A lot has changed since that time. Waldbaums, the anchor store back then has transitioned to Fairway Market and Caruso’s is now known as Umberto’s Pizza of Plainview. Upon a recent visit we saw that although the name may have changed, the great pizza hasn’t.
With three locations across this island, Mi Tierrita in Brentwood envokes a Columbian feast. The rotisserie and grill at the front of the restaurant are pumping out chicken, steak and fish dishes galore; most served over heaping mounds of rice with sides such as plantains, avocado, egg and more. The mood is festive (there’s a full bar with frozen drinks and South American favorites) and the mostly spanish speaking staff and clientele are certainly appreciative of this taste of home. If heaping mounds of piping hot foods with excellent sides is your thing, then this is your new spot.
