If you told us we could have 24 hours of guilt-free sugar indulgences and we could visit anywhere on the island to splurge, we may just have to take all of those hours and devote them to eating through Buttercooky Bakery’s entire inventory of breads, cakes, pies and cupcakes.
Being that it’s the summertime, we’ve covered a lot of dessert spots, and more specifically, frozen yogurt spots. Swirlz World is new to the area, having just opened their doors within the past six weeks. This is a self-serve yogurt hotspot and one thing that they have that most others don’t is a huge selection of pick-your-own candy.
We’ve met Roe’s Casa Dolce’s original location in Rockville Centre when they were recently featured on our favorite TV show on FiOS1 LI, “Restaurant Hunter” (link here), but now they’re expanding their reach on the south shore with their new location in Merrick.
The Little Sugar Shop in Valley Stream is just that; a tiny little shop hidden away on East Valley Stream Blvd. pumping out wonderful cupcakes, brownies and other sweet treats.
What used to be half of the site of a long-standing convenience store (the other half is now the expanded Town Bagel) is now revamped and upgraded to suit this decade’s biggest fad; the self-serve frozen yogurt shop. Catch The Wave opened up in 2011; an independent shop riding the surf in an ocean filled with corporate juggernauts.
Although a nationally recognized franchise, Kilwins in Babylon is the only one of its kind in the area, so for our purposes, we’ll consider it to be a local product worthy of an overview. Specializing in all things sweet; fudge, ice cream, candy, etc., this is our Suffolk County go-to spot when that sweet tooth is yearning for something, well, sweet.
Since 1982, Diane’s Bakery and Cafe has been a staple of the north shore community. Located just next door to Trattoria Diane, an italian restaurant owned and operated by the same family-run company, they’re open both for baked goods and cold and cooked food. We wandered inside to take a look at what they’re serving up.
Five Pennies is our new favorite dessert spot on Long Island. It’s got everything that we want from an ice cream shop; fresh ice cream, frozen custard, incredible ices and an owner whose sole purpose is to keep making them better (and more delectable).
NY Cupcakery is a small cupcake shop located on Merrick Road in Bellmore. Since 2010 they’ve been baking wonderful cupcakes, cake pops and cakes not only for the general public, but also for private events and parties. The imagination of the bakers on site is endless and some of the crafted baked goodness coming out of this shop rivals any of the best across the country.
One of our favorite aspects of having this great website is trekking around the island and picking out interesting businesses to feature for our loyal readers. Driving through Huntington on many occasions in the past few years, we’ve always passed by Wild Flours, a unique bakery on New Street. This time, we elected to stop in and snap some photos.
