Three Comfort Food Spots Across Long Island

Three Comfort Food Spots Across Long Island

While the temperatures seem to be higher than normal, they’re still lower than we’d like them to be. In the colder months, we’re always looking for food to keep us warm and insulated from the outdoor elements. We’ve traversed the island to choose a few restaurants that will put the comfort back in your food.

The Classic – Thomas’s Ham & Eggery

If you transported yourself back in time over the last few decades and visited Carle Place, not far from Roosevelt Field Mall, you’d find that everything was different way back when. Everything but Thomas’s Ham & Eggery, that is. They’re the last holdout of the original local establishments and they’re still going as strong as they were when they opened their doors.

Thomas’s is a diner unlike most found these days on Long Island. Where others are opening up huge and glitzy and with anything that you can think of on the menu, Thomas’s reminds us of simpler times. Limited seating, a smaller menu and a small town vibe are all on order. The wait can sometimes be pretty long and if you don’t get to the restaurant by 10am on a weekend, you may find yourself waiting for quite some time.

Country Cookin’ – Sweet Mama’s

Sweet Mama always has our best interests at heart, and it’s certainly in everyone’s best interest to visit this cozy, country-esque haven for comfort food on Suffolk’s north shore. The fried chicken, shepherd’s pie and mac and cheese are out of this world. Stop by on Monday nights for burger night and they’ll throw in a thick milkshake for the comfortable price of $1.

The South Shore Dessert Spot – Slap Happy Bakery

Since 2007 Slap Happy Bakery has been making fresh desserts from the best ingredients to feed the hungry south shore masses. Besides the hottest dessert of the last few years; cupcakes, they also bake a mean lemon merengue pie and “itty bitty fruit pies” (served in apple, blueberry or cherry variations). Take some home, top with vanilla ice cream and you’ve got one of America’s favorites; a throwback to the times when everything was simpler; even the desserts.
