Sometimes it’s nice to enter a restaurant just as they’re setting up, snap a few photos of the calm before the storm and quickly get out of there. That’s exactly what we did when we visited The Fifth Season in Port Jefferson.

Originally located in the Greenport area, opened in 2004, The Fifth Season made the switch to Port Jeff in 2008. When they were first in Greenport, they were known as one of the only “slow food” restaurants on Long Island, a concept that tries to source all of the seasonal ingredients locally (the opposite of “fast food”). Ahead of its time, they received a huge following, and those diners (and more) have followed them just west into Port Jeff.

They’re doing some wonderful things here; both for the local food-growing economy and the consumers who reap the benefits. It would be a travesty for everyone on Long Island to miss out on the chefs who started the local, slow food trend, before it was ever trendy.
