Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park

Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park

Peter’s Clam Bar is such an institution on the south shore of Long Island (and very much taken for granted that it will always be there) that like the Statue of Liberty, we always pass it, but never visit. That changed last week when we stopped by for a Friday night dinner. We arrived to live music, calm water and affordable seafood. We left satisfied and vowing to return.

With boats docked and with a direct view of Barnum Inlet, the water view is tranquil and relaxing should you be lucky enough to score a seat outside or a window seat inside. They’re open all year-round, utilizing the full indoor seating arrangements. Outside, a band was playing covers from the 90’s, bringing us back to our high school years.

Established in 1939, Peter’s is one of those few restaurants that define the south shore seafood dining scene. There’s fresh seafood, water views, a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. We settled upon a 1.5lb. pot of mussels cooked and served in a white wine / garlic sauce. The mussels tasted fresh (no sandy texture) and there was enough for a meal. The roll that was served alongside the mussels was perfect for dipping into the wine sauce and for mopping up those extra flavors.

Since we’re on an island and surrounded by water, it’s really our duty to eat on the water this summer. With so many choices, it’s always hard to pick a favorite, but we can file this away as one our favorites of the summer of 2012, thus far. Next time, we’ll be sure to partake in a few of those frozen drinks coming off the exterior bar. Those looked amazingly refreshing.
