New for 2012 is The Bamboo Bar and Grill on the Nautical Mile in Freeport. We stopped by this past weekend before their busy lunch and afternoon rush to relax on their outdoor sand-covered dining area overlooking the calm waters and the marina.
Similar to Pop’s in Island Park (much, much smaller, though) and nearby newcomer Tropix on the Mile (same owners as E.B. Elliot’s), they’re aiming to bring that beach-like feel to eating out on the water. The calm before the storm, when we were there was populated by a private party inside, dominated by kids, but our servers were telling us that the beach area with picnic tables, although vacant at our meal, is packed with diners and those enjoying drinks from the bar later in the day and into the night.
The cuisine is American, with a slant towards California Coastal. We started with the lollipop wings; tossed in a mild sauce that had a nice kick to it. For our entrees we went for both the grilled chicken wrap with avocado and fresh mozzarella as well as the shrimp salad (we were staying health conscious.) Our 4-year old toddler opted for the kids Grilled Cheese. You can’t mess up a grilled cheese, so our dining partner was a happy customer (when she wasn’t playing in the sand a building castles with the plastic cups the staff brought over).
The staff was exceptionally friendly, the food acceptable and the view worthy of the price of admission. Next time we hope to ditch the toddler and return for an adult night out.
