moolala in Merrick

moolala in Merrick led the self-serve frozen yogurt movement on the South Shore when it opened in 2010. We’re seeing a lot of competitors opening up in the immediate area lately, but this locally owned and private company is holding its own in the frozen yogurt wars that are heating up by the day and involve some national heavy hitters.

It’s as easy as picking out a cup, filling it up with any of the twelve flavors on tap, adding the toppings and moving along on your merry way at moolala. The toppings range from fruits, to cookies and candy, but one thing is for sure; the yogurt can be as healthy as you want to be. With most flavors in the fat-free and reduced fat range, there’s not so much guilt so long as you can withstand walking by the sugary toppings and ignoring them.

The cost is $.49 per ounce, and things can get pretty expensive if you load up a larger size cup with heavier toppings. The yogurt bar is set up so that you can mix and match your flavors, so just be careful not to overdue it or you’ll be in sticker shock by the time that you end up at the cashier. $9+ for yogurt?! Yeah, it’s happened to us, too.

Robert Rosenberg, the owner of moolala, can be seen at the restaurant daily and judging by the lines that are still in the store even a year after the grand-opening, we might see a few more moolala’s popping up in other areas on our island. We’ll be keeping a look out.
