In Depth Photo Tour: North Fork Table and Inn in Southold
When one gets invited to North Fork Table and Inn in Southold, on Long Island’s North Fork, one drops everything and makes a beeline for the restaurant (and brings a camera with them to catalogue the trip). Such was the case on a recent chilly Sunday afternoon. True to fashion, North Fork Table and Inn lived up to the hype and showed us why they have been one of the top restaurants on Long Island (28 out of 30 for food in ZAGAT) on a consistent basis.
Seasonal, local and organic, North Fork Table one-up’s almost every restaurant on the east end. Creative ingredients, romantic atmosphere and attention to detail are some of the reasons that diners have been trekking their way to the establishment for many years. The building, doubling as an inn that houses guests to the local area is akin to stepping back in time. The exposed wooden beams and the wood floors create a rustic vibe in the restaurant and there are many pockets of dining areas to explore on the ground level area. Reservations are available, but only a month prior to the dining reservation. Seats fill up quickly and diners who have a quick-dial feature on their phones will be treated to a prime-time reservation.
Although many of the diners at the restaurant may include some of the most well-known, richest and most successful in the United States (and beyond), locals looking for that unique dining experience will be treated the same and will experience the same unique dining pleasures. Our visit came just one day after Matt Lauer, of The Today Show, visited during his weekend out east.
Chef Gary Hayden oversees the kitchen of this Long Island juggernaut and in the many years that he has been at the helm, the cuisine is only getting better. The Prix-Fixe menu, consisting of 3 courses for $75 was what was presented to us on our visit. Peconic Bay Fluke Credo (raw Fluke served with Grapefruit, ginger cracklings, hawaiian red sea salt and cilantro shoots) and Assorted Baby Beets were served as appetizers while Long Island Crescent Farms Duck Breast (with ver-jus braised red cabbage, crispy duck confit strudel, grain mustard and apple soubise) delighted us as one of the entrees. For dessert a Caramelized Upside Down Apple Tart, served with apple-pear butter, vanilla creme fraiche and apple sorbet stole the show and ended an otherwise amazing meal on a very sweet note.
Creativity is everywhere on the menu of North Fork Table and Inn. The ingredients that are placed together in each dish are outside the box, but just work together with each other so well. North Fork Table and Inn may not be an every weekend type of restaurant, but for that special occasion, or that night where all you want to do is impress, this top restaurant on Long Island is the one spot that should be on everyone’s very short list.
