Feed & Grain in Northport
The Heat Miser finally gave us a break, so we ventured outside to have lunch at Northport Feed & Grain. We’ve been meaning to visit this place for months since it’s one of the few restaurants in downtown Northport that offers outdoor seating and we’re all about al fresco dining anytime it gets above 60 degrees (and, in light of recent temps, under 100!). Not only was the setting charming, but the food was delicious.
The appetizer that had been recommended by several people was the Calamari Calabrese. It was love at first bite, a wonderful taste explosion in our mouth, and we had to play nice and share it with our other dining companion. The lightly battered and fried calamari rings swam in a buttery wine sauce bursting with garlic, bleu cheese and banana peppers. An inspired and well executed dish, it’s easy to see why everyone says to order this.
Spicy Lobster Gnocchi: one of the specials Feed & Grain frequently offers, and it’s a good thing they do. The pink sauce with just a slight kick is the perfect foil to the soft potato gnocchi, topped by a succulent lobster tail, and we found some oozy mozzarella as a pleasant surprise on the bottom of the bowl.
Crazy Nuttiness: an entree salad with mixed greens, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, cranberry & cinnamon-crusted goat cheese rounds, and Asian plum dressing. They certainly don’t skimp on any of the ingredients in this dish, and it all blends together nicely to create a sweet, crunchy and goat-cheesy bite.
Decor: We took a peek inside and while cozy, it did appear to be a bit “dated” in its decor, better suited to a cold winter’s night than the summertime, but that’s why they were smart and put in the patio which can seat about 30 people and overlooks the charming Main Street of Northport.
Our inside foodie track also raves about this restaurant’s fresh seafood dishes such as lobster by the pound (plucked from their tank inside) and mussel pots, but they also offer an array of sandwiches, burgers and entree salads. We encourage you to pay a visit to Feed & Grain the next time you’re in Northport, especially if you like calamari.
